Farm living meets coastal dream: How a Sunshine Coast local manages her own business around family life

With its year-round summer vibes, beachside hotspots like Mooloolaba and Coolum, and thriving commercial hubs, Queensland’s Sunshine Coast is renowned for its perfect mix of work and play.

This certainly rings true for Maroochy River-based Laundry Lady, Trish, who is successfully raising her young family on a farm while running her own business.

Lifestyle, balance, and choice. It’s what being an independent contractor with The Laundry Lady is all about, as we discover in our latest Q&A.

Flexibility, balance & lifestyle with Laundry Lady

Trish, a busy mum of three, explains that her youngest child was around four months old when she first saw the ad for Laundry Lady on Facebook, and considered it the ideal opportunity.

“I figured I would be spending a lot more time at home anyway – so why not incorporate paid washing into my day?” she says.

Managing her schedule on her own terms, Trish completes her clients’ washing, folding and ironing during the week, and catches up on her family’s laundry on the weekend.

“On the average weekday, I do the school and daycare drop offs, laundry pickups and deliveries (from the day prior) then get set up to work at home.”

Currently working four days a week, Trish assists with the laundry needs of residential and corporate clients from Peregian Beach and Coolum up to Yandina, Valdora and Eumundi.

While Trish is out building connections with customers in her local community, Laundry Lady drives the marketing and online bookings.

“The Laundry Lady Head Office team takes care of all the bookings and digital side – so it’s all made very easy.”

Sunshine Coast Airbnb & spa towel services

Despite a slight “lull” due to COVID, Sunshine Coast Airbnbs, holiday homes and accommodation providers are officially back in business – and Trish and the Laundry Lady Team are on hand to help!

“I have Airbnb clients in Coolum, Peregian Beach and the Town of Seaside,” she says.

“I also do the washing and drying of towels for massage businesses at the Sunshine Plaza.”

The perks of being your own boss: your time, your choice

And what about the additional income for the household?

“It really takes the pressure off,” Trish explains.

“It means we can do all those extra things as a family; a day at the park here, ice cream treat there.”

And with Sunshine Coast beaches, rainforests, hiking trails and shops just a stone’s throw away from her rural home set alongside the Maroochy River and sugar cane fields, Trish is able to enjoy the lifestyle, be there for her children’s needs, and progress her career goals.

“You can really build it [the work] up to as much or as little as you like,” she says. “I’m in charge, and enjoy being my own boss.”
