Interview with Cairns’ Laundry Lady, Yvonne

Mobile Laundry Service Cairns

Meet Yvonne, your local Laundry Lady in Cairns. Budget friendly mobile laundry services: commercial and home laundromat, washing and ironing!

Came for the sunshine, stayed for the lifestyle

Originally hailing from the United Kingdom, Yvonne and her husband moved to Cairns 24 years’ ago with a tropical sea change firmly in their sights.

Yvonne says she was promised palm trees, sandy white beaches, and glorious sunshine by her husband.

“And he didn’t disappoint,” she says of the Far North’s lush rainforests, plentiful wildlife, and insta-worthy islands. “He just forgot to mention the heat, bugs and humidity!” she jokes.

Bugs aside, Yvonne, like many other overseas expats and holidaymakers, soon fell in love with her new Queensland home.

Flexibility and meeting new people

Yvonne joined the Laundry Lady team in November 2018, supplementing income from her own business.

But, as we know, life doesn’t always go to plan.

When Yvonne’s husband became ill, her original business fell by the wayside. Luckily, she was able to pick up additional work thanks to the flexibility of Laundry Lady.

“I think being part of the Laundry Lady team has huge benefits, including flexible hours, meeting new people, and being able to determine your working schedule,” she says.

“In my case, I could look after my husband, pop out to pick up the washing or ironing load, and then finish the work in the comfort of my home.”

Looking towards a brighter 2021

With Cairns and nearby holiday hub Port Douglas (known as Queensland’s capital of barefoot luxury) relying on tourism for much of its business and commuter market, Yvonne admits she wasn’t completely immune to the impacts of COVID-19.

“Due to COVID I lost my other business, so far from being an additional income, my aim is to build the [Laundry Lady] business to become my sole income.”

Aside from holidaymakers and fellow sunseekers, Yvonne’s varied customer base includes accountants, teachers, NDIS participants and more.

“I look forward to working with Susan and the rest of the Laundry Lady team, and I am excited to see what 2021 has in store.”

She remains optimistic about the New Year, especially with the predicted uptick in domestic tourism and interstate flights.

Port Douglas and Palm Cove are a bit empty at the moment, but the tourism market will kick off again from March and over the Easter break.”

Team culture and ‘giving it a go’

Laundry Lady employs contractors right across Queensland, Victoria and soon, New South Wales.

Despite the geographical distance, Yvonne says there is a great team culture working with Laundry Lady.

“I really like the new, branded shirts, and even display the magnets on my car,” she says.

“Social media makes it easy to connect with other Laundry Ladies (and Lads). It makes you feel part of a team.”

Her advice for those who may be thinking of coming on board?

“Get out there and give it a go!” she says. “It’s a great opportunity to be your own boss and choose your own hours.”
