Mobile Laundry for Students

Pick Up Wash & Fold Services in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Gold Coast

Students keen to kickstart their careers and, in many cases, experience living out of home for the first time are taking part in Orientation Week activities at universities across the country from this week.

USC on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland is welcoming around 5,500 new students alone at its campuses from Moreton Bay to the Fraser Coast.

Orientation Week (or O-Week) is a program of social and academic activities, generally held twice a year in Semester 1 and 2 the week before classes start.

This year, online opportunities will complement the on-campus fun in-keeping with COVID-safe measures.

Similar initiatives are held across Melbourne, Sydney, the Gold Coast, Cairns, and other educational hubs.

From faculty welcomes and information nights to market stalls and social events, one aspect of student life that is often overlooked is the inevitable housework – including the laundry!

Uni student accommodation & household budgets

Accommodation options for students moving out of home range from shared housing and private rentals to university-owned houses, on-campus college dormitories and off-campus units.

International student arrivals may be down as a result of travel restrictions, yet a competitive housing market and low vacancy rate has pushed rental costs higher in major cities.

According to website Business Insider, in Sydney, the falling vacancy rate from its peak has pushed the average house rent up to $663, or 3.2% higher month on month. Units now cost $457 per week, or 2.2% more. In Brisbane, the vacancy rate sat at 1.7% in January 2021, down from 2.5% in January 2020.

As budgets continue to tighten, students are increasingly turning to shared accommodation, dormitories, and university-owned options.

These types of shared-style living arrangements lend themselves to the newfound independence of ‘moving out of home’, but don’t always include access to affordable and reliable laundry facilities.

With limited space, ironing boards, drying racks and storage for laundry liquids and soaps may also be out of the question.

The solution? Mobile laundry service, Laundry Lady, has a national team of contractors who can pick up clothing, uniforms, sheets, towels, and other fabrics from student housing, and return them smelling clean and fresh the next day.
