The national unemployment rate has increased to 7 percent, while the working from home trend continues to track upwards, according to new figures.

Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data released this month shows more people joined the unemployed queue in October, with casuals hit hardest by jobs losses.

Head of Labour Statistics at the ABS, Bjorn Jarvis, said “Total employment fell from around 13 million to 12.2 million between February and May 2020, with two thirds of the fall occurring in casual employment.”

Employment in casual jobs fell from 2.6 million to 2.1 million between February and May 2020.

“Prior to the COVID period, casuals accounted for around 25 percent of all employees. This fell to around 20 percent in May,” Mr Jarvis said in a statement.

Meanwhile, insights from job platform Seek show more than 30 percent of people were working from home in mid-2020.

This comes on the back of lockdowns and increased social distancing measures in the workplace.

What does this mean for the workforce?

The ‘home office’ and home business ideas is a trend that’s gaining in popularity, with notable benefits for both employers and employees.

It seems we quite like working in our pajamas, drinking our morning coffee at home, and saying goodbye to the long commute.

Experts agree that the ever-resilient Aussies have now proven we can effectively work from home

As a result, they’re expecting more people to leave major cities and CBD areas, opting for the fresh air and flexibility of regional life.

Earlier this year, Seek surveyed the habits of Australian job seekers and those employed. Key results showed that:

  • 41 percent are now re-thinking their careers
  • 1 in 4 intend to apply for a job in a new industry.
  • 2 in 3 would choose job security over a higher salary.
  • And 32 percent now work from home.
