As Australians begin to enjoy more travel freedoms and the weather starts to warm up, questions turn to: where will we go these Christmas holidays and New Year?
Give the gift of travel
Looking for travel inspiration or school holidays ideas…
Tourism Australia is encouraging people to Give the Gift of Travel this summer – showcasing all the experiences, sights and natural wonders on offer in a brand new campaign.
“Last year, Australians spent, on average, $770 on gifts during the holiday season equating to $16 billion in total. If we can encourage people to spend just a fraction of that on travel instead it would be a multi-billion dollar boost for the tourism industry, ” Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison says.
“We know from our research that there are high levels of pent-up tourism demand in Australia, so by giving the gift of travel, people can be sure they are giving a gift that people will want. So, rather than giving socks, give a surfing lesson or a walking tour,” she says.
Border restrictions easing for Aussies
As reported by Reuters earlier this month, Victoria has now removed entry restrictions to citizens of neighbouring New South Wales, allowing almost blanket reciprocal travel between the country’s two biggest states ahead of the busy Christmas period.
Travel company Flight Centre says “open borders between Australia’s economic powerhouses” will be a major boost for hotels, airlines and other tourism businesses as flights resume between Sydney and Melbourne, one of the busiest domestic routes in the world before the pandemic.
This is good news for those looking to make the most of the Christmas break and spend their holidays with family and friends.
