For Brisbane-based mum and entrepreneur Jo, getting back into the workforce after being at home with her young kids was “very important”.
A little over a year since first clicking onto a Laundry Lady job ad, Jo has not only recruited her husband into their booming laundry contracting business, but exceeded her income expectations and found that elusive work-life balance.
“After coming across the advertisement for Laundry Lady in September 2020, I signed up using the online application form and haven’t looked back,” Jo says.
She says that she was able to “hit the ground running”, with marketing and customers all taken care of by the Laundry Lady head office team and established digital platforms.
“I was so busy in those first couple of months, and my husband was seeing the results. He decided to quit his night shift job of eight years and join me, as a Laundry Lad!”
Jo and her husband Johnny are undoubtedly a power couple when it comes to the mobile laundry service game.
They are two of more than 55 contractors working as part of the growing Laundry Lady brand, now operating across Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Western Australia.
The award-winning business is set to double its workforce and recruit an additional 60 independent contractors – just like Jo and Johnny – in preparation for the busy Christmas and New Year period.
A Day in the Life…
So, what exactly does being a Laundry Lady or Lad with a mobile laundry service like The Laundry Lady entail?
“We [Johnny and I] work Monday to Friday,” Jo says, explaining that weekends are “family time”.
“On a typical work morning, I head left to drop the kids at school and make laundry pickups out towards Holland Park and Forest Lake, while Johnny goes right to pick up client washing in the Brisbane CBD, Jindalee and Westlake.”
She says the “staggered roster” setup and streamlined laundry system they have created at home (which includes multiple machines and clotheslines) ensures a seamless production line and manageable workload.
Like the many Aussies “drastically impacted” by COVID and cuts to regular income, Jo says that joining Laundry Lady has been life-changing.
“Thanks to Laundry Lady, Johnny was able to buy his new ute to complete laundry runs, and we’re now in a position where we can look at buying a house next year.”
And just how do Jo and Johnny manage a busy household, children’s sporting and school activities, along with their work-from-home business venture?
“We’re both home by around midday after the morning pickups and dropoffs, and we then get into the washing,” Jo says, admitting she’s enjoying the extra time she now has with her partner by her side.
“At night, when the kids are in bed, we then move all the clean laundry that’s been washed and ironed into the front foyer, ready for the morning run.”
Jo and Johnny’s clients range from busy families like themselves to commercial customers like Brisbane Airbnb, beauty spas, tattoo studios, yoga studios and more.
“We even have some corporate clients that we meet up with in the city, dropping off their freshly ironed work shirts.”
Flexible home-based roles for mums, dads, students and more
Working in a high-demand metropolitan location like Brisbane, Jo and Johnny are sitting comfortably at the top-end of their capacity.
While the full-time gig works for them and their savings goals, Laundry Lady offers flexible days and hours for those who may want to come on part-time and supplement their existing income.
In a first for the business, Laundry Lady has this month announced a massive recruitment drive, where it is looking for mums, dads, students, individuals, and husband and wife teams.
“Our contractors – Laundry Ladies and Lads – don’t join us because they love doing the laundry; they join us for the flexibility, where they can grow their earning potential at their own pace,” says Laundry Lady CEO, Susan.
Jo mirrors this sentiment, encouraging those who may be thinking of joining the team to simply “give it a go”.
“It’s such great value, and really gives you that sense of pride,” she says of the low start-up costs and ongoing support.
“For us, it’s just the beginning.”
How to apply – 60 roles in 60 days! Get on board
Due to growing demand for quality, affordable and mobile wash and fold services, Laundry Lady is looking to recruit 60 news contractors in 60 days – just in time for the silly season!
You don’t have to work full-time or Monday to Friday like Jo and Johnny, you have the flexibility to choose your own roster and work as little or as much as you want to suit your life.
Some Laundry Ladies and Lads work 1-2 days a week to earn some extra income, while others work full-time on their own to replace their income. Others may work in a husband and wife team to build a solid family income that far exceeds their previous employment.
