Local business woman named as finalist for national awards

CEO of The Laundry Lady, Susan Toft, has been named a finalist in four categories as part of the 2021 AusMumpreneur Awards.

The Laundry Lady, which provides mobile laundry services across Queensland, NSW and Victoria, is recognised in the Women’s Champion, Digital Innovation, Service Business, and Business Pivot categories.

The AusMumpreneur Awards, presented by The Women’s Business School, celebrate Australian mums in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business excellence, product development, customer service and digital innovation.

They celebrate the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family.

Susan, who left her corporate career to pursue her startup dream, recognises the importance of flexibility in the workplace, especially for busy mums.

“I wanted to help other mums struggling with the same work-life balance by creating a work from home business that could be replicated all over Australia,” she says.

Laundry Lady has grown over the years from a solo operation to a team of 45-plus contractors, plus a head office of six employees based in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast.

“Our next milestone is a team of 100 contractors, offering that same quality and affordable wash and fold service for home, holiday rentals, businesses and National Disability Insurance Scheme clients.

“We are thrilled to be named finalist in not one, but four categories as part of this year’s Awards, and I’d like to congratulate all our fellow nominees and finalists.”

Last year, Laundry Lady won Silver in the Digital Innovation category (QLD/NT) for its online booking platform and website.

Customers are able to book their washing, drying, folding and ironing services at the click on the button, making Laundry Lady accessible, easy and contactless.

Work from home opportunities for busy mums (and dads)

There are many benefits to balancing business and motherhood, as Susan explains.

“I love assisting mums and women to create their own business and rediscover financial independence.”

And, in The Laundry Lady’s case, it’s not just an opportunity for women.

“More men, fathers, husbands and sons are joining our team all over Australia to enjoy the flexibility of working from home – shifting that notion of women being the primary caregiver, and offering choice and freedom.”

It can be challenging to be a successful business woman whilst raising a family, and Susan gives this advice for others thinking about starting their own enterprise.

“Tap into existing systems and support, whether it be joining a networking group, finding grants and assistance to help your business launch, engaging with mentor programs, or joining a business like ours!”

“Know the reason why you are starting the business. When things are tough, you’ll need to focus on this to keep you going.”
